Preparing for a Korean Wedding with My American Husband, Part 1: Budget, Venue, and Studio-Dress-Makeup Timeline

🌏 Life in Korea | Living with My American Husband 🌏 Language: 🇰🇷 KR | 🇺🇸 EN We’re a Korean–American couple who got married in Korea  May 2024 . We decided to hold only a Korean ceremony, while celebrating separately with our U.S. family with a nice dinner and photos later. Because of that, the entire process followed Korean wedding customs , which felt quite foreign to my husband. It was my first time, too, but I at least had some idea of what to expect from my friends and family. He, on the other hand, had never been exposed to how that process works in Korea — so everything felt new. For anyone preparing a wedding with an American or otherwise-foreign spouse unfamiliar with Korean wedding culture , I’m sharing our full wedding timeline and practical tips by stage based on our real experience.

Knitting a Garment — Project Review

I’ve always loved making things with my hands—knitting and cross-stitch were my favorites. In elementary school, I knit a scarf every winter break. Somewhere along the way, that habit faded. Through middle and high school I focused on studying, then in college and beyond I told myself I was “too busy.”

During maternity leave I realized I didn’t have many hobbies I truly enjoy in my free time. I thought, “What if I make a piece of clothing myself—wouldn’t that be fun?” So I added “Knitting a Garment” to my “Someday/Do” list and ordered a Slowflow DIY vest kit for my first try.

· Project: Knitting a Garment

· Duration: 6 days

· Cost: 64,500 KRW (Slowflow DIY vest kit; base set + needles, crochet hook, etc.)

The finished piece is a clean dark-gray vest (photos below). Since this was my first time making a garment, I had to learn new steps along the way. There were tricky moments, but the satisfaction at the end was huge.

🎧 What I Felt

With music on, knitting clears my mind and anchors my focus in my hands. That state is simply joyful. The fit of the final piece is a little off, but perfection on a first attempt is a tall order. The rhythm and flow of knitting felt healing—enough to make me certain that I want to keep this project going.

· Keep or Drop: Keep ✅

Fit check — shoulder fits my husband, length suits me; needs size adjustment.
Fits my husband's shoulders but is short in length; fits my length but the shoulders are wide on me.

🪡 What’s Next

  • Try crochet
  • Retry the vest with corrected sizing
  • Make a cardigan

This “knitting a garment” project reminded me how much I love making things with my hands. Slow but happy—time that takes shape at my fingertips. I’m already excited for the next piece. 🌿
